Why It’s Essential To Take A Break More Often (To Be On Your A-Game) 👌

Some days (some weeks) I feel like a crazy human.

Sometimes I think it’s just down to being a girl and hormones and shizz – the ladies reading this post will know what I’m sayin’. TMI ✋🏻, soz.

Other times, I put it down to being crazy in love with what I do.

It’s probably a mixture of both.

Anyway, I was having one of those days this week.

I had a loverly weekend. Really lovely.

I caught up with my girl Sammy and watched Disney – cos’ who doesn’t love a fairytale.

I impressed myself and made some dangerously yummy peanut butter cups (with dark chocolate and sea salt) – which I’m not sure was a good move or not, because I think I might have almost accidentally put 100g of peanut butter on my spoon while making them. Maybe.

I went on a boat, because my town has a boat that you’re meant to see if you live here apparently.

And I enjoyed a few glasses of red, which I never really do… buttttt you gotta live once in a while, haven’t ya.

And then come Monday morning after listening to one of my favourite Marketing podcasts, while painting my lashes with mascara,

I got excited.

Like ‘geeky’ excited.

All of a sudden a new paid traffic strategy switched on a light bulb in my head, and I couldn’t wait to get to the office and spill my brains out with this new thing I wanted to put into action.

Like right then and there.

I couldn’t wait.

My brain was feeling hectic. But the good kind of hectic. I was inspired.

But sometimes after this high of inspiration… I.don’t.stop.

Literally. I don’t stop.

And between you and I, I get frustrated with myself sometimes when I don’t give myself a break because I know what’s about to happen.

I’ve got better at giving myself a break this year. I promise I have.

But as last night I was going round and round in circles about what I wanted to write and never actually came to a decision – this morning I woke up and thought why not talk about the one thing that’s come to my awareness this week??

Which is why it’s important to take a break, and chilllll.

Because since going back home to see my family once a month this year I’ve learnt this…

That almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes. Including you.

Last year I had a ton of mini burnouts behind my apartment door.

I never stopped doing. I never stopped opening e-mails, being obsessed with reading Marketing blogs, I couldn’t put my podcast app down, I couldn’t tear myself away from reading a book to learn more and more and more…

The cognitive load is real, boo.

And I’m not alone. So many of us freak out inside about taking a break, especially when you love, like crazy, what you do.

But like breathing, sleep, water and good food, it’s not only ok to take a break – it’s essential.

Lets get real – your dreams don’t have an expiration date, and in order for you to have the energy to do your best work… You’ve got to take the time to fire up that energy… and keep it revved up!

The world isn’t gonna vanish if you log-off the internet for a few hours or so. Your creativity won’t suddenly die.

In fact, you’ll likely find that giving yourself a time out will fire up your creative engine and make it even louder. Even more colourful.

Science backs it up, too. And you can’t argue with the facts.

Your brain requires downtime to do its most innovative thinking.

You know those ‘random’ ideas you have while driving or in the shower? They aren’t coincidental. They’re a result of you chilling the f-out, whether you’re aware of it or not.

So take a break you hard-working human.

Sing in your car. Ride a bike. Take a hike. Grab a coffee with your gang. Paint your nails. Lay on a foam roller in the gym. Clear out all those old clothes you’ve been hoarding and don’t wear anymore, but you save ‘just incase’…

Just do something other than then work you do.

Just for a day (or more if you dare 😉 )

And enjoy feeling fresh, and having your work game on point 👌

Lemme know how it goes.
