My Morning Routine: Your Questions Answered…

Mornings are important to me. And, I’m quite specific about them.

I get asked a lot (A LOT — no exaggeration) about my mornings, I hope out of curiosity, but I think a few enjoy having a giggle at it too 😉

So, it made sense I wrote my next blog all about it (answering the questions found on )


Me + Mornings = the greatest love of all…

What is your morning routine?

I typically wake up between 4:00am and 4:15. Since March 2018, I’ve made a conscious effort to gradually wake up earlier. No checking texts or scrolling through Facebook. I simply tap my alarm off, sometimes do a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 countdown then throw the duvet off.

I down a glass of water.

Get ready for Ishnaan (a Yogic cold shower).

Meditate, do my chosen Kundalini Kriya.

Get into my gym gear, lift some heavy stuff, deep breathe.

Shower, dance while I cook, eat, read, and get in my work zone ready to get down to business at 10:30.

That pretty much sums the basic details up 😉

How long have you stuck with this routine so far?

This one with the 4am wake ups? Ever since the beginning of March 2018.

The cold showers (Ishnaan)? Since April 15th 2018

However, it’s been a good 6 years since 2012 that I’ve welcomed an early wake-up call into my life of 5am. I’ve just pushed it back an hour.

Has your morning routine changed over recent years?

Certainly! And I’m certain it will evolve again over the course of my life.

I used to wake at 5am, now I wake at 4am.

I used to have to set off at 8am to get to work, now I can leave at 9:45am, 10am if I choose to!

I used to fuel my mornings with a bowl of gluten-free oats, now it’s more like cheese, eggs, and potatoes. Or, my most recent favourite — frozen narnas, organic peanut butter, almond milk and vanilla protein powder (cos it’s like ice cream).

I never used to have time to read, now I do.

I NEVER used to have a cold shower, but now I couldn’t see myself living without it.

Who knows what’s next?

What time do you go to sleep?

Ok, cue the *eye rolls*, wide open mouth reactions, giggles, and mocking…

I sleep between 8:00pm and 8:30pm (most nights).

If I go to bed later than 10pm for more than 2 nights in a row, I certainly feel it.

I’ve learnt my body feels best when I get a solid 7–8 hours zzz in. And I don’t care what anyone says, no one will ever get in the way of me and my early bedtimes.

Only I’m allowed to change the rules… occasionally.

Do you do anything before going to bed to make your morning easier?

I like to make sure that all the washing up is done and put away.

I don’t like waking to mess, I feel like mess can trigger a chaotic start to the day, and who wants to spend their precious mornings washing up anyway?

Then I switch my boiler off so my shower can be as cold as possible, otherwise, it’s just lukewarm, I want ice baby!

I’m a big believer in the way you end your day, is just as important for how you start it.

Do you use an alarm to wake you up in the morning, and if so do you ever hit the snooze button?

Yes, I used an alarm (and I’m guilting of hitting snooze if I’ve fallen asleep a little later).

My alarm is NOT obtrusive and loud, it’s a soft vibrate, and I tend to wake up 5mins before it goes off, or as soon as it does.

I’d like to get one of those lamps though that gradually wakes you up with light and see what difference that makes.

How soon after waking up do you have breakfast, and what do you typically have?

Between 3 and 4 hours seeing as I hit the gym at 5am 5 days a week, I find I workout best eating when I get in, instead of before.

At the moment my breakfast is either a frozen banana, peanut butter and protein powder smoothie OR scrambly eggs, salmon (or steak), and new potatoes sizzled off in grass-fed butter (you can’t leave out the grass-fed part 😉

Mmm mmm mmm.

Do you have a morning workout routine?

Silly question. YES I do ;D

I LOVE my morning workouts. I begin with mobility work, lift some heavy stuff, then finish with a quick HIIT, AMRAP or EMOM sesh.

I like to have my workouts planned for 3–4 weeks so I know exactly what I’m doing when I walk through the gym doors with the Vikings soundtrack in my ears.

Do you have a morning meditation routine?

I do, and maybe I’ll write a proper blog post on it soon.

I recently fell in love with meditation after struggling to find myself in it for years.

I do Kundalini Yoga Kriyas and meditation after my cold shower for 30–40mins — what I choose to do depends on whichever one I feel drawn to, or need the most.

Do you answer email first thing in the morning or leave it until later in the day?

Nope. Email can wait until 10:15am.

Do you use any apps or products to enhance your sleep or morning routine?

Not currently. I’m kinda an organised freak, so all I use is the notes app to log my workouts, Spotify for my mantras and a notepad to free write and track my cold shower tally in.

How soon do you check your phone in the morning?

Because I listen to meditations and log my workout using apps on my phone, it’s pretty inevitable that I’ll glance at my notifications as I get out of bed, but I don’t usually check them until I’m eating breakfast.

I’m working on the no phone with breakfast thing — but when you track macros… forgive me for not being a 100% of the time mindful human ok?

What are your most important tasks in the morning?

Ice shower, meditation, movement and good food (to good music).

What and when is your first drink in the morning?

I always have a glass of water ready by my bedside, so the H2o.

How does your partner fit into your morning routine?

I don’t have one. But I’d hope one day he’d respect it, or maybe even want to join in with the morning meditation! Now that would be rad.

Do you also follow this routine on weekends, or do you change some steps?

I still ice shower, meditate and move. But I stay out of the gym, my body needs to recover. And I’ll sometimes grab a bit more sleep on a morning. Just a lil’.

On days you’re not settled in your home, are you able to adapt your routine to fit in with a different environment?

For the most part, yes. I always try to find a way. And if I can’t, that’s cool — one of the beautiful things about life is it’s uncertainty.

What do you do if you fail to follow your morning routine, and how does this influence the rest of your day?

I feel completely thrown off. I notice a BIG difference in my energy and inner joy on days I meditate, wake early and move versus the days I don’t.

I like to be the boss of my day, at least my mornings, the part I CAN control.

1 day out of routine is alright(ish). 2, 3, 4, 5 days? Don’t go there.

Anything else you would like to add?

There are so many books and articles out there about secrets to success and why you should wake up early and what the perfect morning routine should look like.

My advice is just do what feels GREAT to you.

There is no ‘perfect way.’

What works for me may not work for you… I mean, I don’t know many people who would enjoy adapting to my routine anyway!

Find your groove and keep adjusting until you find what feels sweet to you, and enjoy evolving it over the course of your life too.

But what I can say for sure, is if you can find a moment of calm, 3, 5 minutes of calm for yourself where it’s just silent — make sure you breathe that in. It really does make all the difference.

    What is the benifit of the ice showers and how did you get yourself to do it? and continue doing it? also do you still ice shower during winter?

      This is going to be my next blog post! 🙂 I planned on doing a post reflecting on my first month so I’ll cover it all there! And yep – even in Winter I’ll still continue. I live in the North East of england – it’s cold here 98% of the time 😉 Thanks for reading! xo

        I tired to cool down my shower the other day and didnt last long at all. I admire you for being able to do it, its not easy.

        If you rub oil on your body before getting in, it makes the initial ‘shock’ a lot less intense. Try putting one body part in at a time then bringing it out the water and massaging it – that helped me 🙂 x
